Liberty Ellman, Grey McMurray and Gyan Riley in conversation with Alternative Guitar Summit founder/curator Joel Harrison. A loose, wide-ranging discussion on the incredible breadth of guitar styles and approaches that have proliferated in new music and jazz in the 21st century.

Grey Mcmurray exists at the crossroads of new music and rock in a guitar style forged with working with Caleb Burhans, The Exit, itsnotyouitsme, Beyondo, Bell, Naked Brunch, So Percussion, Lenka Dusilova, and others.
Liberty Ellman is one of the most acclaimed and sought after jazz guitarists and composers of his generation. He works with Henry Threadgill, Joe Lovano, and Myra Melford, and just released a recording on the Pi label which received many "best of 2015" accolades.
Composer/guitarist Gyan Riley erases the boundaries between jazz, world music, and contemporary classical. He’s one-half of the chamber-folk duo Probosci, and has performed with Zakir Hussain, Dawn Upshaw, and his dad, the pianist/composer Terry Riley.
Alternative Guitar Summit founder Joel Harrison is a guitarist, composer, arranger, vocalist and songwriter. Named a Guggenheim Fellow in 2010, he has released 17 CD's on seven record labels since 1994.
About NYGF Academy:
Launching at NYGF ’16, this new tradition brings together students, instrument makers, composers, audiophiles, discerning aficionados, and master soloists in convivial symposiums devoted to different aspects of performing, recording, writing for, and building guitars. The Academy will be co-curated by David Spelman and Ed Keller, the director of The New School's Center for Transformative Media (home to the “Future of Guitar” series). “I’ve long wanted to expand the educational components of the Festival, and this takes an important first step in that direction,” NYGF Founder David Spelman explains. “Our ambition is for the Academy to become the TED Talks of all things guitar,” says Spelman.
